Agasthiyar Maharishi, one of the foremost among the 18 revered Siddhars, conducted extensive research on human destiny. He deciphered the connection between one's karmic influences and their birth details, using unique thumb impression patterns—categorized into top, middle, and bottom lines—to determine their life circumstances. According to Nadi astrology, these impressions indicate whether an individual will experience a high, middle, or low status in life. However, by following the prescribed remedies mentioned in the palm leaves, one can alter their hardships and fulfill their destiny.

The origins of Nadi inscriptions date back nearly 5000 years. It is believed that the ancient Sapta Rishis, including the 18 Siddhars, recorded detailed life patterns of individuals on palm leaves. These insights were gained through their yogic vision and divine guidance from Lord Shiva. Initially, these sacred manuscripts were preserved in the Saraswathi Mahal Library in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu.

During British rule, many of these manuscripts were sold and dispersed. Recognizing their immense value, certain astrologer families, particularly from the Valluvar community of South India, collected and safeguarded them. Over time, Vaitheeswaran Koil became the central repository for these sacred Nadi leaves, continuing the tradition of Nadi astrology.

Vaitheeswaran Koil, near Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu, is regarded as the principal center for Nadi astrology. This temple town holds great spiritual significance, as it is believed that Lord Shiva manifested as a divine healer (Vaidhya) to alleviate the suffering of devotees.

The process of identifying an individual’s palm leaf begins with their thumb impression. The ancient sages classified these impressions into 108 types based on distinct line patterns. This classification helps determine the corresponding set of palm leaves containing a person’s life predictions. The time taken to locate a specific leaf depends on how quickly the thumb impression can be matched. Some impressions lead to an immediate identification, while others require more effort.

These sacred inscriptions are not limited to a particular region or religion. People from all over the world, regardless of nationality or faith, have their destinies recorded in the Nadi manuscripts. However, due to time, damage, or loss, only about 60% of seekers are fortunate enough to find their leaves.

The palm leaf and thumbprint reading system is a significant branch of Nadi astrology, widely practiced in South India. The fundamental belief is that destiny is interconnected—one’s thumbprint, palm lines, living space, facial structure, and even the arrangement of their surroundings all reflect their karmic path. Through Nadi astrology, individuals gain profound insights into their past, present, and future, empowering them to take remedial steps for a harmonious life.
